Hi, our names are Mandy and Jason Cancino, and our story of living more thoughtful, when it comes to the food we eat, the way we exercise, or don’t(guilty right here), or the way we vaccinate our children or don’t, what we put on our bodies and want we don’t, all started about 7 years ago.
The year was 2010. For us, it was before both of our boys, Hunter, now age 5, and Connor, age 3, were born. I really have to thank my wife, Mandy, for being the initiator and leader, in this area, or should I say, areas of our lives.
After a long run with our own business, and lots of hours every week, we were the heaviest we had been at that point in our lives, so we decided it was time to start doing something about it.
But we just didn’t start eating healthier and exercising more, Mandy started researching, studying, and learning more about the difference in eating organic vs. non-organic foods.
At that time, we had just read the book, The Belly Fat Cure by Jorge Cruise. That book is what really started making us look at the effects of insulin in your blood steam and it encouraged/recommended to take a probiotics everyday.
That is where it all started, and it has evolved to so much more, since then.
From their, and I am thankful for it, Mandy continued to dig deeper and deeper into how, what we put into our bodies AND onto our bodies, effects us.
Then in September of 2013, our youngest son Connor, was diagnosed with Down Syndrome.
We learned quickly that Connor’s biochemistry was different than that of typical kids. Dr. Schwartz, a functional doctor that also specializes in the biochemistry of kids with autism and down syndrome, taught us that the standard advice given to typical kids, was not always effective, or even safe for Connor because his actual biochemisty was different.
It felt like Connor’s first full year of life was that of constant congestion, stuffiness, and running nose. We were told by our former pediatrician that it was just a cold, but after a full year, Mandy decided to dig deeper.
That is when she was introduced to Dr. Schwartz. We learned that Connor had a dairy and gluten sensitivity. We immediately pulled it from his diet, and within 2 weeks, his congestion, that lasted a year, was gone.
Yeah!!! It was a small victory, but in the right direction. Not only was he able to start sleeping better, but so were we!!! 🙂
With that win under our belt, Mandy starting to dig even deeper, and continued to meet with Dr. Schwartz another 4 times that year, to make sure Connor was hitting all of his milestones.
Dr. Schwartz really taught Mandy and I a lot that year.
As we continued down this journey of learning more about health and wellness, we, well, specifically Mandy, started to get asked a lot more questions about what she was learning. It started out with a couple of text messages here and there from friends asking about certain brands of food, which ones were a better choice than what they were using.
Than it was questions about the different essential oils that we were using, and how and when to use them.
It got to a point, that literally, once or twice a week, someone on Facebook was asking Mandy a question, because they knew she had done the research on a specific topic.
At this point, I had been learning, through a company called Wealthy Affiliate, the ins and outs of blogging, and I told Mandy that she really needed to consider, starting her own blog.
I told her that she really needed to share not just with close family and friends, but with the world, what she was learning because it was making such an impact in our lives, and the lives around us.
She said she would be willing to do it if I handled all the tech stuff so that she could focus on researching. I agreed and Balancing Point was born.
Why the Name Balancing Point?
Mandy was the one who came up with the name and the reasoning behind it. You see, we ourselves have been on this journey for 7 years, and we are no where near perfect, nor consider our selves to have made it, when it comes to health and wellness….but we are on the journey.
And everyone’s journey is different. If you would have told me 7 years ago, that I needed to get rid of gluten or dairy in my diet, including my beer, or said that I can’t use a microwave ever again, or eat fast food, or use different deodorant or toothpaste, or that essential oils are a better choice than anti-biotics, or that I can’t use carpet fresher when I vacuum, or that I can’t use certain dryer sheets to make my clothes smell good because they contain harmful chemicals….then I would have told you that you are crazy, and there is no way I would ever do that.
Little by little, though, we did start to make changes. We started to change what was going into our bodies, and onto our bodies. But we had to have a balance, we didn’t just do it all at once. We would introduce new changes, one at a time. Then after that change, whether it was changing our laundry detergent or our toothpaste, or changing from regular sphagetti to gluten free spaghetti, once that change was set and part of our daily routines, then we would move on to the next one.
Mandy explained that every one will have their own balance on how they are implementing change into their own family’s life, and that every family, will have their own Balancing Point.
Many people have asked us, “There is so much information on living a safer and healthier lifestyle, where do I start?”
When it comes to what goes on your bodies, which includes, but is not limited to; lotion, sunscreen, soap, shampoo and conditioner, and other skin care and makeup products, we recommend a company called Beautycounter.
Beautycounter is a company on a mission to get safer products in the hands of everyone. The refuses to use harmful chemicals or ingredients in their products. They even have what they call a NEVER LIST, which is a list of harmful chemicals and ingredients that they have committed to “Never” use in the making of their products.
If you haven’t read our article, “13 Ingredients Banned by the E.U. that are Lurking in Your U.S. Beauty Products,” then you need to read this now.
When it comes to what goes in your body, I would start with eating organic foods; grass fed beef and butter, and free range, organic eggs, and especially your fruits and vegetables.
So there you have it, a summary of how this all got started, and where and how you can get started on your journey too. Please let us know if you have any questions, or if you would like to hear more about certain topics, don’t hesitate to comment below.
